Introducing #OpenChange: An Online Community for Changemakers

Communication and collaboration are the lifeblood of any social movement. Creating real, impactful change requires hard discussions and deep, ongoing engagement by groups of people who share a belief that we can make the world better, together. Enter #OpenChange.

Earlier this year Ideal State launched the #OpenChange community on Slack with support from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation (WKKF). This online community for changemakers is designed to be a supportive space for global idea exchange and positive action.

Members of #OpenChange hail from nonprofits, philanthropy, government, academia, and elsewhere. All members have the option to host and/or participate in private channels for working together with their closest collaborators. They can also access a growing number of open channels for networking, knowledge sharing, and forging new alliances with others working toward social good.

Those leading private channels on #OpenChange receive access to Ideal State's in-depth toolkit for driving successful online collaboration, as well as hands-on support and guidance from an #OpenChange host.

Here are a few examples of the exciting work currently happening on #OpenChange:

  • Advocates for improving knowledge management (KM) in philanthropy are hosting discussions and virtual panel events to identify the best KM tools and practices for supporting remote work, and exploring ways to apply an equity lens to KM-related initiatives.
  • WKKF grantees working to support families and children across Detroit and the Chipias and Peninsula-Yucatan regions in Mexico are sharing and discussing timely news and resources as the regions cope with COVID-19 and take on local issues such as police violence.
  • A global community of disaster risk reduction professionals are launching a forum to collaborate and innovate as they support partners in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Program evaluators are working to create opportunities for equitable learning within their foundations, and with their grantees and partners.

Many tools exist for virtual collaboration. #OpenChange is uniquely designed to support changemakers.
